Job Purpose

Evening Standard and The Independent currently outsources the support of IT. We need to review future support provision which could require the migration of several core systems and support. This is initially an 18 month role, with a potential to become permanent.

About you

You are an experienced IT leader who has knowledge of the publishing industry and advertising and publishing systems.

You understand modern cloud environments and have the capability to develop and execute a plan to migrate to it.

You are able to deliver a strong agile and effective IT framework for the future in a cost efficient manner.

Skills and Experience:

  • Able to develop and deliver an IT Strategy in line with business direction.
  • Experience of significant systems project management.
  • In depth understanding of cloud architecture, in particular Azure.
  • Managed an outsourced IT support function.
  • Control of significant budgets and responsibility for procurement of software and hardware.

Key responsibilities

  • Review future support options. If required, ensure clear migration path for both the Evening Standard and Independent.
  • Establish new resourcing if required.
  • Negotiate new contracts and licensing with application providers.
  • Ensure that the IT and network security meets business need and is reviewed regularly.
  • Ensuring deployed systems and services meet the business needs and availability.
  • Establish and ensure compliance with appropriate IT policies.
  • Procurement of IT equipment and software.
  • Setting and control of budget.
  • Develop an IT strategy for the Evening Standard as a whole, and ensure that business IT requirements are analysed, working with each department to determine and deliver their IT requirements.
  • Maintain a rigorous change management process.

About You

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals with good knowledge and experience of current affairs on social media. An understanding of SEO is also beneficial. The right candidate will thrive in a busy and exciting digital first newsroom. Working closely with the features desks, you will ensure we are identifying trending on-brand stories for loyal and new readers and deliver them so they reach maximum traffic potential across multiple platforms. A keen interest in current affairs - from politics to film, fashion and celebrity news is a must.

The Audience Team

You will work within a team of social and SEO editors responsible for optimising and posting our content. You will work independently on our features accounts, covering Insider, Reveller, Escapist and Culture on all platforms. You will report into the Head of Social and Audience Editor as well as attending daily meetings with the features team to identify new topics, and discuss strategy for promoting the day's commissions.

Job Purpose

The features social editor is responsible for packaging and posting our Features and Lifestyle content in an engaging manner, understanding the different needs of our users on different platforms. Editors also help to identify on-brand trending stories and topics, offer ideas, and work with journalists across the newsroom to optimise for search and social media to ensure it meets maximum traffic potential. We are looking for individuals with a passion for features and a creative energy that will make our content stand out from other publishers. You should have a strong social voice, able to hit the correct tone in sells on anything from investigations into domestic abuse cases, to Is Kim K with Pete D?

Key responsibilities:

  • Package and post ES Features content across all our social channels and platforms
  • Cultivate a unique, witty and sharable voice to speak for our Features content
  • E​ngage with our readers in comments to create a loyal online community
  • Optimise content to ensure maximum audience reach and engagement
  • Identify trending topics to feedback to commissioning editors
  • Work as part of the editorial team to ensure all staff are following social and SEO best practices
  • Maximising reach and engagement for content across our key verticals / channels
  • Keep abreast of developments in the field and advise on potential gains and pitfalls

Skills and experience:

  • Experience working in a newsroom environment
  • Experience posting on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • An understanding of TikTok and how-to create social videos
  • Should be confident to work independently
  • Ability to write engaging headlines and sells
  • Ability to identify trends that would make for good potential stories
  • Understand the ES brand, tone and audience
  • Thinking creatively and pitching ideas on how to make the most of each story on each platform
  • A solid understanding of media law

Role purpose

The Evening Standard is looking for an experienced business journalist to help manage the paper’s fast-moving business desk alongside reporting.

Maternity cover for the Deputy Business Editor role involves helping the business editor and business news editor oversee the running of the desk. Key responsibilities include: helping to draw up daily news lists and covering for the business news editor when they are off; helping to put pages together and proofread them; and taking part in online review and forward planning meetings.

The role also involves reporting alongside management duties. The successful applicant is expected to write daily news and features for the paper and online.

The role is full-time (Monday to Friday), with four days a week in the office. The deputy business editor will be expected to be in the office from 7am, Monday to Thursday.

The team

The Evening Standard business desk is a team of five reporters and editors who put together the paper’s business section each day. The desk produces three pages every weekday and more stories online, setting the agenda for the business and financial world in London and beyond.

The pages are regularly read by CEOs and MPs for insight into the biggest stories of the day, as well as the workers who make London tick. We report stories first and are driven to break news.

About you

The desk is highly collaborative and fast moving. We are looking for a team player who is comfortable meeting tight morning deadlines and is energised by setting the London agenda for the day.

Our mornings are spent on the phone to major CEOs getting the first take on the biggest stories in business. A good background knowledge of business and finance is essential, as is an ability to turnout clean copy quickly.

Skills and experience

Candidates must have depth of experience at a national or major regional newspaper or significant news website covering business and/or financial news.

Management and editing experience is preferred but senior reporters will also be considered.

Experience covering the property, retail, and luxury sector is preferable, though not essential.

The News team

The News team is at the heart of the Evening Standard with a long-standing reputation for breaking exclusive, agenda-setting stories that are followed by national newspapers, broadcasters and media around the world.

Role purpose

A reporter’s role is to work with the News desk and senior executives to produce exclusive, digital-first content and comprehensive news coverage across all platforms. The role is a core part of the team for the Evening Standard.

About you

You have newsroom experience and are capable of working across multiple platforms to produce and source digital-first exclusive stories, pictures and video and cover breaking news around the clock.

You have the ability to produce swift and accurate content, thrive in a fast-paced news environment.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience working in a dynamic and fast-moving news environment, a quick, accurate and confident writer
  • Ability to work with the News desk and senior executives to help produce digital-first exclusive content and cover breaking news across multiple platforms.
  • A good understanding of media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice to help ensure all content is legally safe and compliant with expected standards.
  • A capable communicator able to respond to direction from the News desk and senior staff.
  • Knowledge of current affairs including politics, crime, business, arts, celebrity news, education, health, environment, technology, foreign news and Royal stories.
  • Experience using CMS systems.

  • Producing and sourcing stories, pictures, video and audio content for the Evening Standard across all platforms.
  • Helping to ensure the Evening Standard continues to be first with breaking news.
  • Delivering content in a timely manner, legally safe and compliant form.
  • Helping to generate and deliver ideas for special projects, investigations and in-depth pieces.
  • Responding quickly to instructions from the Newsdesk and senior editors and ensuring these are delivered in full.
  • Working the necessary hours to help staff the newsroom across the full week.
  • You will be accountable to the Executive Editor/Head of News and other senior executives.

The Studio27 team

Studio27 is the commercial creative studio for the Evening Standard (in print and online) We are an award-winning content creation agency. Our work spans a variety of forms, which include but are not limited to, print and digital content and advertising, social campaigns, video, AR/VR and experiential activations. While most of the work focuses on creating content campaigns for clients, the Design team also work on ES branding concepts, trade marketing campaigns and supporting other areas of our growing business.

Role purpose

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Deliver daily revenue and weekly targets that contribute towards the annual Digital, Newspaper, Magazine and Events budgets for all ESI platforms.
  • Achieve daily revenue and weekly targets that contribute towards the annual Print and Digital budgets for all ES platforms
  • The Account Director will be accountable for delivering the Evening Standard Display budget and also for multi-platform trading across ES.
  • You should drive both traditional IO based business as well as programmatically delivered campaigns, in conjunction with the Programmatic team.
  • The Account Director should be able to provide the Head of Media Team with a succinct and reasoned appraisal of the business position and effectively manage up accordingly
  • To create a plan that will ensure focused levels of proactivity – using agency and client segmentation to prioritise work.
  • To be a key member of the sales team that thrives on creativity and innovation – taking part in internal initiatives
  • Create a flow and process that makes best use of our insight and data to sell ideas, opportunities and packages
  • Weekly meeting with your manager to set sales and activity focus
  • Deliver on KPI’s as set by line manager
  • Communicate regularly with internal teams to ensure high levels of communication and collaboration
  • Detailed pipeline of activities to help close business
